Abstract: | The author examined the sources of biases in China's official CPIs in order to determine whether the CPI-based rate of inflation accurately represents the inflationary pressure in China's consumption goods market. Although a downward bias due to covert price hikes has been suspected, the CPI was largely consistent with a unit price-based parallel index constructed with disaggregated retail sales data. China's macroeconomic policy has become more expansionary. |
