Abstract:The Japanese have been practising benchmarking, though not under that term , for a long time. Often the target companies are leading American firms and within Japan, large organizations were used as models by small and medium sized firms. The most widespread form is product benchmarking which suits the "me too" mentality. Less popular are functional and process benchmarking. Benchmarking in Japan takes on a "copycat" form.
