Abstract: | This paper advances a conceptual model which focuses on leadership requirements in evolving organizational contexts. The substantive and symbolic aspects of the leader's role are reinterpreted. A major focus of the model is a reconceptualization of the role of leadership in situations of decline. Both the effectiveness of a leader and the achievement of desired performance outcomes are hypothesized to be a function of the leader's ability to correctly interpret contextual demands and appropriately implement symbolic and substantive actions. |
