Abstract:Street robbery and violence in the city centre has, temporarily at least, driven St Petersburg's venerable stock exchange's illustrious past. Originally set up in 1703 by order of Russia,s first architect of perestroika, Peter the Great, the exchange began the 20th century accounting for 90% of all Russian bond and equity trading. But in 1900 St Petersburg was still the country's capital, since when the city's exchange has been in almost constant decline.
