Abstract:By questioning a sample of 300 German industrial enterprises the following main problems of a by now as normal characterized variant-production could be proved: high amount of tied up circulating capital, decreasing lot-sizes, increasing number of special and express orders, and frequent changes of sales figures. Production managers only show a mean satisfaction with computer based systems for production planning and scheduling (PPS). Least satisfaction was uttered concerning the master production plan. As a variant specific choice of PPS-Systems is not followed by higher results of satisfaction it is obvious that there are no convincing solutions for a variant specific planning yet. On the other hand production managers make only little use of offered features such as variant specific bills of material.
