Abstract:The U.S. banking system has been prone to failure, primarily because it has been mis-regulated. Bank have been restrained from diversifying and from serving their customers effectively by restrictions on branching and on products offered. But competition has been good for bank customers. Depository institutions that offer the public essentially similar choices are regulated by different agencies that use , as a matter of fact, different rules.
