Abstract:Literature on women in management shows that women are similar to men in managerial behavior and work attitudes, yet generally achieve lower statuses in organizations. Gender appears to function as a powerful independent bias, grouping jobs into separate promotion ladders and clustering jobs in certain positions on those ladders. This article attempts to explain the gender gap in management by supplementing the socialization literature with the anthropological concept of cultural adaptation and the ideas of cultural dominance and marginality.
