Abstract:Benchmarking is generally said to have been conducted first by Xerox in the United States. However, in Japan it has been practised for a long time. Although there was no such term as benchmarking, Japanese firms were conducting benchmarking exercises on leading companies in their field, many of which were American. And within Japan, small and medium size companies often modelled their practices on large organizations. Benchmarking in Japan therefore presupposes the existence of American and large Japanese firms as models for best practices.
