Abstract:The benefit of flexible manufacturing is that it provides a means to allocate capacity to meet a production demand. This allocation process involves many decision alternatives that need to be evaluated. The evaluation is useless unless some means exists to relate the actual performance of the flexible cell to its planned performance. This lack of an effective means to monitor the performance of flexible manufacturing has had a significant impact upon its acceptance as a viable technology.
