Abstract:In 1970, Amana controlled 60 percent of the consumer microwave oven market, but by 1983, its share had slipped to less than 6 percent. According to the author, it did not recognize that the strategic leverage in the industry was shifting. The Amana case study illustrates how managers often concentrate on tactics designed to achieve short-term gain and lose sight of the fundamentals behind their strategic leverage.
