Abstract:A flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is a form of technology which realizes much of the low unit costs obtained from an automated mass production system, whicle maintaining the flexibility of a job shop. A strategic benefit of such automated manufacturing flexibility is the ability to quickly respond to changes in design, demand, order volumes , and scheduling. This paper explores performance tradeoffs between specific levels of design (the type and number of pallets available for system use) and performance (system throughput) of a FMS.
