Abstract:The American Locomotive Company (ALCO) deserved to succeed. The company consistently put innovative products onto the marketplace, it was well acquainted with the needs of its customers and it was realistic about the stregths of its competitors' products. Yet ALCO failed. ALCO did its best, but was never in control of its own technology. It relied upon technology provided by a much bigger strategic partner to obtain a competitive edge in the marketplace. The ALCO story draws out what relying on strategic partnering really means. Added to this article is a short note by P. Killing on the perils of strategic alliances.
