Abstract:Corporations with their dependence on natural resources and their need to get rid of wastes, have long had a love/hate relationship with the environment. For nations, the dilemma is no simpler. Should government bow to the voters, who want clean air and water, and enact tough environmental laws? Or should it listen to companies, which are forced to move jobs overseas if environmental costs rise much further? To find out where environmental regulations are headed, and how companies and countries can use them for economic advantage, the author spoke with F. Cairncross, the environment editor for The Economist.
