Abstract:When electromagnetic waves carrying a broadcast of a violin concerto or a commercial for a new, allegedly improved breakfast cereal are received by a radio and output as music or speech, a transduction has taken place. The electromagnetic signal has been transduced to sound waves. A series of transductions occurs also in the living systems that hear the broadcast, from the sound waves that impinge on the human eardrum through the ossicles in the middle ear to a neural signal propagated through auditory channels to centers in the brain. Input is also transduced by living systems at levels above the organism.
