Abstract:Determination of the minimum wage is an important way to protect labourers legal rights. This paper discusses the connotation and make-up of the minimum wage, the basis on which it is determined, and a few concrete methods of determination. It also presents relevant theories and practices both at home and abroad as well as the author s own views. In 1956, the government decreed that the bottom wage be 30-34 yuan, which could basically ensure the minimum living necessities of 1.5-2 persons. In 1985, the minimum wage of State enterprise workers was fixed to be 35-38 yuan, being irrational. In 1989 Zhuhai was the first city to determine the minimum wage through legislation, and Shenzhen, Guangzhou followed suit.
