Abstract: | What does the available empirical evidence tell us about the cyclicality of real wages? Drawing any firm conclusions is made more difficult by the existence of a host of measurement and methodological issues. One choice that has a first-order effect on the estimated cyclicality of real wages is the time period selected for analysis. Real wages in the United States have been more procyclical since 1970 than prior to that time. This finding appears to be linked to time series variation in the relative intensity of the shocks that shift the labor demand and labor supply schedules. |
