Abstract:The emergence of a number of complementary generic environmental management standards (BS 7750, EMAS and the ISO draft guidelines) is the latest expression of a managerial approach to environmental issues. While in general this approach is a welcomed advance on the largely technical responses of many firms to environmental matters, many problems remain to be articulated. The principal concerns of this study are to analyse the key aims of these standards, and in particular BS 7750 and, following this to query the efficacy of the management system the standard prescribes.
