| Abstract: | Forget the wrangling of politicians over the sovereignty of their own money. Even if they agreed tomorrow, there are dozens of technical nightmares awaiting Europe's financial leaders before they achieve a single, mutual currency. Some of the best brains in the markets, and in the corridors of power, are trying to foresee what they are, and how they can sort them out. Imagine the following. The counterparty in a dollar/Deutschmark currency swap due to run until2002 learns that after January 1 1999, the difference-payments and final exchange of principal will not be made in Deutschmarks, but in the single European currency. |
