Abstract:Are manufacturers in business to make money or to serve customers? Clearly, the answer is both. But plants trying to respond to today's demanding customers usually see a challenge in achieving these two objectives simultaneously. The required characteristic is agility: the ability of a plant to respond efficiently to demand volatility. Plant scheduling systems can now quickly optimize the deployment of manufacturing resources to satisfy demand and fulfill each order. This is known as manufacturing synchronization, at the heart of which lies advanced scheduling technology.
