Abstract:This research considers 4 part type demand distributions: uniform, symmetric unimodal, and left and right triangular. Two loading policies are analysed: a maximum rate policy where the inventory is unrestricted, and a minimum production rate policy where the inventory is restricted to a certain value. Both policies seek to minimize the time required to satisfy production demand. This paper shows that restrictions on inventory not only reduce inventory levels but also increase the routeing flexibility of an FMS. Therefore, the minimum cost loading policy is more robust than the maximum production rate policy.
