Abstract:Within a four-stage model of competition between a pioneer and a new entrant accommodation and fighting strategies are analyzed. The model shows that dynamic and strategic effects play an important role. The relative competitive advantage not only determines the profits but also the optimal strate- gies of both competitors. If there is no clear competitive advantage, both players will choose an acommodation strate- gy. In this case the pioneer earns high profits in the initial monopoly period, but he will not be able to sustain higher profits in the competition period. A weak competitor, pioneer or new entrant, will not be able to survive. Clear cost and/or demand disadvantages induce a fighting strategy by the superior competitor. A fighting strategy aiming to drive the competitor out of the market is most successful when one of the players is in a superior position.
