Abstract: | What a difference several months can make. When 1995 ended, things looked dismal for Hong Kong. At 3.5%, unemployment was higher than it had been for a decade. The property market could not shake off an 18-months slump. China's pursuit of austerity in its fight to bring down inflation held back business growth -- and trade with and through Hong Kong. These days, though, the territory's economic heart is starting to bean more strongly. China and Britain are still at loggerheads over Hong Kong's mi 1977 return to Chinese sovereignty. |
