| Abstract: | Industrial development strategies in East Asia have shifted in recent years away from the heavy emphasis in direct government intervention that characterized the approaches used by Japan, Korea and Taiwan to spur industrialization. These strategies now place much greater emphasis on deregulating the economy and liberalizing trade and investment flows. For instance, since the mid-1980s, the Asean nations have shifted from import-substitution policies to market-oriented policies that actively encourage direct foreign investment. |
