Abstract:The practice of sourcing (using cheap foreign labor to make goods that are sold to domestic consumers) has moved up to the political agenda, increasing the pressure on companies to be more accountable for the labor and human rights records of their overseas suppliers. Well known firms such as The Gap and Levi Strauss are scoring points with efforts at publishing policies, and it may be time for any company that sources manufacturing to weigh the cost of setting and maintaining standards against the impact on corporate image of being perceived as a bad or uncaring player.
