Abstract:This article examines the nature of work organization in vehicle assemblers and how new production technology has led to a convergence in organizational structure between all vehicle assemblers. The nature of work under lean production is examined and its origins traced back directly to Taylorism, in particular the building blocks of the Toyota Production System of Jidoka and SMED. The authors argue that to understand changing skill compositions and work organization in vehicle assemblers it is necessary to look beyond the assembly line.
