Abstract:For a second year, the Wharton School has conducted a survey of derivatives usage by US non-financial firms. This survey is more detailed in its questioning and focuses more on valuation and risk measurement issues. It also inquires as to the reason for non-use among the majority of firms that do not use derivatives. In the appendix, a tabulation of the responses to all the questions are included. Derivatives usage among non-financial firms appears to be a fact of modern financial life. The evidence suggests that the percentage of firms using derivatives has not dropped off from 1994 levels. Currently less than half of all non-financial firms use derivatives, although usage is tilted heavily towards larger firms in the commodity and manufacturing sectors.
