Abstract:This study adresses whether Federal Reserve regulatory accounting regulations for depository institutions are sufficiently pervasive as to create regularities in instruments not traded exclusively by depository institutions. The overnight government repos exhibit rate change and variance regularities consistent with regularities identified in the federal funds market. The accounting regulations are pervasive enough to create regularities in overnight government repo rates. The rate changes are not economically large and hence, the influence of regulatory accounting practices does not violate the premise of an efficient market.
