Abstract:A Formal Definition of Business Process The notion of business process used in business informatics can also be traced back to the formal notion of process used in computer science. Based on this fact and on the fundamental structure of a business process, a definition of a formal notion of process is developed. This definition is independent of the level of abstraction and explicitly takes into consideration all characteristics of a business process in business informatics. The formal properties for directing activities - "structuredness", "variability" and "scope" - introduced by management science, are applied to the business process. Together with the criteria "involved organizational unit", "sort of object under consideration" and "sort of activities", they form an identification framework for business processes from a formal point of view
