Abstract:Although greening the national accounts has become popular, its course is not easy. Its advocates are coming from different directions. Some are concerned with preserving the stock of environmental assets and others with the effect of environmental change of welfare. The main concern of this paper is for the proper measurement of national output and expenditure. Greening the accounts merely invokes economic and accounting principles, needed for correctly estimating income which must be sustainable by definition. Attempts have been made to adjust the conventional national accounts of a number of countries to reflect environmental change.
