Abstract:A theoretical exploration suggests both hierarchy and teams are essential for large organizations as collective learning systems. Teams can be seen as the key learning units which can best handle and produce novelty, whereas the hierarchy assures that key learning results are stored and accumulated. Several solutions for the problem of embedded team learning in a hierarchical structure have been explored. By using the idea of circularity, Likert and Ackoff have developed solutions to this problem. However these solutions do not question the principle of the single "linking pin" between different hierarchical levels.
