Abstract:This study examines a complementarity between what have been widely proposed as two engines of economic growth, financial market development and human accumulation. Child labor and school attendance appears to play an important role in the self-insurance strategy of poor households in rural India. Given positive returns to education, this strategy is likely to be costly to households in the long-run. No conclusive research exists on the direct consecuences of erratic school attendance for educational attainment or cognitive skills in development countries. Another goal of this study is to analyze the structure of rural financial markets as revealed school attendance patterns.
