Abstract:The pillar industries of Hong Kong have evolved twice and will evolve for the third time. The first evolution took place during the period from the early 1950s to the end of 1970s. The manufacturing industry replaced transit trade and became the pillar industry of economic development in Hong Kong. The second one began in the early 1980s. Superseding the manufacturing industry, the service industry became the pillar industry. After 1997 when Hong Kong returned to the motherland, emerged the third one which will present the state of dual pillar industries with the dominant service industry supplemented by the manufacturing industry.
