Abstract:The authors try to re-explore the relatively unexamined poststagnation phase of the life-cycle for the second generation of mass tourist resorts that emerged in the Mediterranean, and particularly in Spain, in the 1950s and 1960s. Attention is focused on the unilateral dependency relationship that exists between these resorts and tour operators, consolidators who continue to control the crucial marketing function. A comparison is made with the life-cycle experience of first generation mass tourist British seaside resorts, which were undermined dramatically by the emergence of second generation Mediterranean mass tourism destinations and the concomitant rise in popularity of the overseas package holiday.
