Abstract:Technological performance of r&d personnel can be evaluated by analysing its patenting output. Key investors can be identified in a patent portfolio. Key inventors file a large number of high quality patents. The distribution of patenting output from inventors is analysed for 43 German companies from the chemical, electronics and mechanical engineering industry. It is shown that technological performance is highly concentrated among individual inventors. In particular, a very small group of key inventors accounts for an outstanding share of their companies' patenting output. The findings suggest that, in order for a company to stay technologically competitive, it must identify, nuture, and work to retain its leading inventors. The resulting implications for human resource management in R&D are outlined.
