| Abstract: | Last year, winner of the 1998 Best North American Truck of the Year award and Motor Trend's Truck of the Year award was the most unlikely automobile manufacturer to produce a new sport-utility vehicle in the U.S.: Daimler-Benz's Mercedes Benz U.S.International (MBUSI), maker of the M-Class in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. This article describes step-by-step the astounding feat of a company whose prime focus until 1992 has been called a "learning field", a melting pot of new challenges and ideas that are finding their way back to Sindelfingen and Untertuerkheim where the venerable E-Class and S-Class vehicles are made. |
