Abstract:This article is based on the understanding that foreign inputs suppliers (upstream internationalisation) are of critical importance to the development of the export sectors (downstream internationalisation) of developing countries. There is empirical evidence presented drawn from interviews of 36 owner-managers of Ghanaian firms to illustrate the arguments. The article also draws attention to the managerial and national policy implications of this holistic perspective of internationalisation and identifies areas for further research.
