Abstract:There is a seeming contradiction between its alleged reputation as one of the most rigid labour markets in OECD-Europe and the apparent ability of the Portuguese economy to accommodate to changes in output demand over the last two decades. In addition, and despite a continuous increase in labour force participation (especially among women), the country has evinced remarkably low unemployment - averaging 5.8 percent in the last decade.
