Abstract:This is the first part of the authors' new book, "Learning to Fly", where the authors draw on their experience at BP and describe how knowledge management is maturing in their organization. This part focuses on the work that they are involved in to make KM an "unconscious competence" throughout the whole organization. The paper describes the following subjects: A four-stage model that was used to infuse knowledge management at British Petroleum PLC. Importance of the concept of unconscious competence in an organization; Details of case studies and approaches to improve knowledge awareness and competency; Summary of knowledge management life-cycle at the company; Presentation of the company's framework for knowledge management.
