Abstract: | The authors of the paper compare the employment behavior of women in East and West Germany. They pay an attention to the importance of female employment in West Germany and employment orientation among women in East Germany. The article also considers reasons for taking up employment. The authors state that despite the persistently difficult; labour market situation, the employment orientation among women in East Germany remains high; in west Germany it has increased noticeably. In East Germany women are often employed part time against their wishes. As regard the extent of working hours, the trend in all of Germany is towards more part-time employment.
