Abstract: | In this paper, the authors present a very simple extension of Grossman and Helpman (1991) that is consistent with the conventional wisdom that countries can achieve long-run growth through export-led policies. Also, the authors provide an empirical methodology that uses recent panel data procedures to account for problems of simultaneity and country heterogeneity. This simple Grossman and Helpman extension allows us to show that in an endogenous growth model a country that is relatively less endowed with human capital may also benefit from nondecreasing returns to production generated by technology assimilation that was developed abroad and continue on a path of long-run growth after trade is opened. |
