Abstract:The author of the paper states that individual attractions have a key role to play in the pursuit of sustainable indigenous tourism, by preserving cultural identity and by fostering a culturally appreciative tourist experience. This paper presents the findings of qualitative study into: (1) the dimensions of cultural identity that managers and staff at three Maori attractions in New Zealand have sought to share with visitors, and (2) the extent to which, in this process, authenticity has been maintained. The findings support the notion of "attraction-based identity" - the process by which Maori identity is purposefully constructed or "adapted" to a cultural tourist experience in order to achieve sustainable Maori tourism.
