Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to examine some key developments in managerial attitudes and behaviour in Britain over a twenty year period based on unique national surveys that commenced in 1980 with follow up studies in 1990 and 2000. Most of the themes in the three studies were identical and covered: the nature of managerial work and the organizations that employed them; attitudes to work; ownership of shares in their own and other organizations; views on the role of government and on industrial relations; employee participation and trade unions; perception of which stakeholders' interests should be promoted by their organizations; and, views on the professionalism of managers and a variety of demographic issues.
