Abstract: | This study uses both 'discontinuous' and 'continuous' multinationality count approaches to deal with the foreign involvement of SMEs. The former approach requires cut- points on foreign involvement. Firms in this sample include multinational enterprises (MNEs), domestic firms (DMFs), and hybrid firms (a mix between MNEs and DMFs), which the authors refer to as intermediate firms (IMFs). In contrast, the latter approach does not distinguish between MNEs, DMFs, and IMFs, but treats all firms as entities. The question is whether the use of these different approaches will affect the results. Accordingly, the authors ask whether these groups of firms perform differently, and whether degrees of multinationality contribute significantly their performance. |
