Abstract:This article examines the survival of international joint ventures (hereafter as: IJVs.) formed in emerging countries (here as: em-ctrs). The survival rate of IJVs. is studied, relating it to country risk (here as: ctr-risk). A survival analysis is applied to a sample of 210 IJVs. formed during the year 1996 by foreign partners from the European Union (EU) and local partners from different em-ctrs. Concerning the impact of ctr-risk. on IJVs. survival, the findings provide only a partial confirmation of this impact: the link between ctr-risk. and IJVs. survival is only supported empirically for the overall score of economic risk. A negative impact was observed: a high economic uncertainty is associated with a hazard rate of IJVs. decreasing with time, and vice versa.
