Abstract:Local authorities have shown an increased interest in committing to voluntary environmental commitment. The use of one of them, standardized environmental management systems (EMSs) is analyzed in this article. It looks into how local authorities approach EMS implementation by using two case studies in Newcastle City Council (UK) and Gothenburg City Council (Sweden). Four research topics are highlighted: 1) drivers, 2) strategy for EMS implementation, 3) integration, dissemination and acceptance and 4) future development of the EMS work.
