Abstract: | Academicians and policymakers have argued that entrepreneurship provides a route out of poverty and an alternative to unemployment or discrimination in the labour market. In this paper, data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY) is used to examine the earnings of young business owners (hereafter as: b-owners) from disadvantaged families (here as: dis-fams.) and make comparisons to young wage/salary workers (here as: w/s-wrks.) from dis-fams. For young men from dis-fams., some evidence is found that self-employed b-owners earn more than w/s-wrks. In contrast, it is found that for young women from dis-fams., b-owners earn less than w/s-wrks. |
