Abstract:This paper discusses job losses and setting up an employment scheme, which would allow job losers to smooth consumption. The effects of unemployment benefits on changes in household food expenditures of individuals who have recently experienced job loss, are examined. It is shown that for households without financial wealth at the time of job loss, unemployment benefits help to smooth food consumption. For households running debt before job loss, lower replacement rates lead to a postponement of debt repayment.
