Abstract:This paper aims to increase understanding of the role of reputation (hereafter as: rep.) in the corporate social performance (CSP) and financial performance (FP) relationship (here as: r-ship.), incl. contingencies. Stakeholder (here as: s-hldr./s-hldrs.) theory is drawn on to present a model of rep.'s role in the contingent CSP-FP r-ship. It is found that CSP is affected by s-hldrs.' resource allocation (here as: alloc.) to the organization (as: org.). This alloc. is based on s-hldrs.' assessment of the org.'s rep. relative to s-hldrs' particular expectations. Therefore, rep. plays a key role in the CSP-FP r-ship.
