Abstract: | The article examines the forms of adaptive learning by studying how chemistry professionals interact with and in different kinds of physical settings while they are developing new chemical technology. The authors concentrate on how chemistry professionals analyze information in three different settings, namely in laboratories, pilot plants and industrial production plants, and how they transform information from these settings to another. The results of the study indicate that expert pattern recognition facilitates learning between the mentioned settings. A particular form of this recognition is different kind of seeing. Seeing helps the chemical professionals to process contextual information and discover the underlying problems in a certain physical setting. This way learning is enhanced in and across settings. Also the formation of expert pattern recognition is discussed in the article. |
