Abstract: | In the paper, developed is a model of price competition btw. two international airline alliances (here as: alls.) with consumers' preferences vertically differentiated by the number of stops. Alls. benefit the interline passengers (as: i-psgs). Alls. antitrust immunity (as: a-immty.) do not benefit i-psgs. more than those without a-immty., in contrast to the Cournot-type settings. While a-immty. leads to higher fares for non-stop travel btw. hubs of alliance partners, granting it might be necessary to induce consolidation btw. carriers. Formation of alls. with a-immty. is consistent with the proposed model, even though likely to decrease individual carriers' profit. |
